ROCORI beats Tech in softball; Different Tuesday part scores, highlights

COLD SPRING — ROCORI softball got a big outing from starting pitcher Olivia Drontle to cruise to an 11-1 victory in five innings over Tech in the Section 5-3A quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

The senior gave up only one hit over five innings, striking out 10 total batters and five of the last six she faced. Drontle only threw two walks, also getting on base in all three of her own plate appearances.

“She did a really good job of first-pitch strikes,” head coach Derek Sauer said. “She’s a rise ball pitcher, so if it’s not getting called at the top of the zone, it’s tough. There’s been a couple games where she’s had seven, eight walks because she has a small zone … (tonight) was a big one for her.”

ROCORI first baseman Shelby Prom is mobbed by teammates after a two-run home run in the first inning Tuesday, June 1, 2021, in Cold Spring.

Senior catcher Bree Griffin was 3-3 at the plate, including two doubles. Shelby Prom brought her home in the first inning with a monster two-run home run to go up 4-0 early. It followed a wild at-bat where sophomore Madison Terres turned a sacrifice bunt attempt into three bases and an RBI after a Tech error.

“Our momentum has been to score early and score often: even if it’s bunts (or) walks,” Sauer added.
