Texas Tech redshirt freshman golfer Gala Dumez was tabbed to the All-Big 12 team announced Thursday.
Dumez, the Big 12 individual champion this season, was honored for the first time in her career as she was one of 11 conference golfers recognized by the league. The All-Big 12 teams are based on average rankings from Golfstat and Sagarin as well as a performance at the Big 12 Championships.
Dumez became the first Red Raider in program history to win the Big 12 individual title in mid-April when she combined to shoot 14-under at the Club at Carlton Woods in the Houston area. Garcia shot in the 60s through all three rounds, combining for a 202 final card that marked the lowest all-time at the Big 12 Championships and the lowest by a Red Raider in school history.
The performance was one of three top-10 finishes on the season for Dumez, who tied for sixth at both the season-opening Cowgirl Classic and the BYU Spring Classic in March. She also notched three other top-20 showings on the year and five within the top-25 individuals.
Dumez wrapped the season with a 73.5 stroke average that ranked second on the team only behind Sofia Garcia. Her scoring average ranked ninth all-time in Texas Tech single-season history, a steady improvement from her 2019-20 true freshman campaign where she averaged 74.0 strokes per round.
The Red Raiders played their best golf of the season late in the year behind Dumez as Tech finished either as the team champion or runner-up in their final four tournaments leading into the postseason. That run included a runner-up showing at the Big 12 Championships, Texas Tech’s highest-finish all-time at the conference tournament.
Texas Tech nearly extended its season at the NCAA Louisville Regional before coming in a tie for eighth overall, just outside the top-six cutline to advance to the national tournament. It marked the sixth-consecutive year the Red Raiders had been selected to a regional and the 10th time overall under head coach JoJo Robertson.
Dumez, who tied with Amy Taylor in 19th place as Texas Tech’s top finishers in Louisville, represents one of four returnees from that NCAA Regional lineup for next season as she will be joined by Anna Dong, Cecilie Nielsen and Taylor as part of the 2021-22 roster.
