Graystone Unveils 2021 Volleyball Slate

LUBBOCK, Texas – Following a 2020 season that stretched into the spring of 2021, Texas Tech volleyball head coach Tony Graystone announced the 2021 schedule, which will include both conference and nonconference matchups spanning from August to November.

“We are all looking forward to returning to a traditional season schedule with everyone playing and having a fall championship this year,” said Graystone. “It will be nice to have that stability and for everyone to be on the same page again.”

The 2021 slate features 29 matches with four tournaments including the Red Raider Classic and 11 total home events. Tech will face off against seven RPI top 75 teams, three of which are Big 12 foes.

“We have put together an aggressive non-conference schedule,” added Graystone. “It will definitely prepare us for the Big 12 and also hopefully give us a strong resume for post-season consideration.”

Competition will begin on the road at Rocky Top as the Red Raiders travel to Tennessee to face the Vols, NC State and East Tennessee State Aug. 27-28 for the Tennessee Classic. Tech will open the tournament against ETSU and Tennessee on Friday, Aug. 27 and close with NC State on Saturday.

Tech will head south down US-84 for a Tuesday night matchup with Abilene Christian on Aug. 31 before returning home for the home opener.

Tech will open home competition Sept. 3-4 by hosting Texas State, Rhode Island and Ohio State in the Red Raider classic at United Supermarkets Arena.

The Red Raiders will go back on the road for two more tournaments to close out non-conference play. First, Tech travels to Greeley, Colo. for a match with Northern Colorado (Sept. 8) before heading to Boulder to face Colorado and San Jose State at the Buffs Invitational Sept. 10-11.

Tech wraps up the non-conference slate in New Orleans where the Red Raiders will take on Sam Houston, UAB and Tulane Sept. 17-18 at the Green Wave Volleyball Invitational.

“As always, the Big 12 will be ultra-competitive and every match will be a battle,” said Graystone. “The Big 12 gets better and better every year and we are going to have some great volleyball teams this season.”

Big 12 conference play will open at home in Lubbock as the Red Raiders welcome the Kansas Jayhawks for a couple of matches (Sept. 24-25). Tech will go on the road to match up against Baylor (Oct. 1-2) in Waco. Iowa State will visit the USA (Oct. 7-8) before Tech heads on the road for two weeks to square off at Oklahoma (Oct. 15-16) and Kansas State (Oct. 27-28). The Red Raiders host TCU (Nov. 5-6) and travel to West Virginia (Nov. 18-19) before closing out the regular season against the national runner-up Texas Longhorns (Nov. 26-27) in Lubbock.

“I think we have put together a schedule that reflects the confidence we have in our team going into 2021. I really like the roster we have built and am proud we have grown and improved over the past year. I know this team is ready to get back together and start competing again,” Graystone concluded.
