At 16-under-par, Aberg leads the 2021 European Amateur Championship through two of four rounds after posting a round of 10-under on Thursday at the Golf du Medoc Resort in France. Aberg, who is No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and the top European amateur, made 10 birdies and eight pars to post 61 in the second of the championship. He’ll go into the third round two strokes ahead of Christoffer Bring who is in second at 14-under after posting 64-64.
Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas is at 7-under and in 12th overall after posting 67-68 through his opening two rounds, while Alejandro Pedryc is at 2-under (70-70). Fosaas, who is from Notteroy, Norway, made three birdies and had a bogey-free round on Thursday to put himself into contention.
Texas Tech signee Gustav Andersson is currently at 6-over after shooting 73-75 through his first two rounds.
An Eslov, Sweden native, Aberg began the tournament by shooting a round of 6-under, 65 on Wednesday which put him one shot back of the first-round leader Alexander Frances who was at 8-under. Frances dipped back on the leaderboard by shooting 5-over on Thursday while Aberg surged. A rising junior at Texas Tech, Aberg is the top ranked amateur at the tournament at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and has not made a single bogey through two rounds.
The 34th European Amateur Championship has 144 competitors from 32 different countries in the field this week. Previous champions included Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rory McIlroy (2006). Aberg is looking to become the first Swedish player to win the event in over 20 years and would be the first Red Raider.
Aberg is coming off an All-American and All-Big 12 sophomore season at Texas Tech where he finished tied for eighth at the NCAA Championships and also earned victories at The Prestige, Thunderbird Collegiate and Jones Cup Invitational. Showcasing his consistency, he completed the season with nine top-10 finishes in 11 events played. Aberg competed in the Scandinavian Mixed in Sweden following the collegiate season, finishing 30th in the professional event.
