A Gaston County talent as well as a local team left Friday’s Class 1A state track and field meet in Greensboro “dripping in gold.”
Highland Tech’s Lauren Tolbert was named 1A girls most valuable performer at the meet, while Mountain Island Charter ran away with the boys 1A state title at North Carolina A&T State University’s Irwin Belk Track.
Tolbert became the third Gaston County product to take top honors at the state track championships, joining Cherryville’s Trentavis Friday (2013-14) and Ja’Ciya Guthrie of Bessemer City (2019).
The Highland Tech junior medaled in each of the four events she entered, claiming gold in the 400- and 800-meter races. She added to her count by finishing second in the 100 meters and third in the 200-meter dash.
As for Mountain Island Charter, it flexed its muscle both individually and as a unit to bring the first NCHSAA team track title to Gaston County, as well as the first for the Mount Holly-based school. Its 91.5 points outpaced Pine Lake Prep (54), Franklin Academy (42.5) and Hayesville (38.5).
The Raptors claimed gold in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, as well as the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays. Armontre Ferguson and Trae Nickelson finished first and second in the 100-meter dash, with the latter also snatching gold in the 200 meters. Meanwhile, Giovanni Bernard’s time of 50.65 seconds proved good for him to win the boys 400-meter race.
Mountain Island Charter also won the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays, while taking third in the 4×400-meter relay.
Lincoln Charter left Greensboro with a state champion as well, the Eagles’ boys 4×800-meter relay team outlasting Union Academy to earn state gold.
