Highland Tech’s Tolbert, MICS boys tops in 1A observe and discipline

A Gaston County talent as well as a local team left Friday’s Class 1A state track and field meet in Greensboro “dripping in gold.”

Highland Tech’s Lauren Tolbert was named 1A girls most valuable performer at the meet, while Mountain Island Charter ran away with the boys 1A state title at North Carolina A&T State University’s Irwin Belk Track.

Tolbert became the third Gaston County product to take top honors at the state track championships, joining Cherryville’s Trentavis Friday (2013-14) and Ja’Ciya Guthrie of Bessemer City (2019).
