Texas Tech’s Matt Wells nonetheless trying to find stability at QB

ARLINGTON – Texas Tech hasn’t posted a winning record since 2015. Hasn’t won a bowl game since 2013, doing 0-2 in six seasons since former coach Kliff Kingsbury’s first and only postseason victory.

The program’s outlook hasn’t improved much in two seasons under coach Matt Wells, who led Utah State to 44 games, two bowl wins and two 10-win seasons from 2013 to 2018 before replacing Kingsbury. The Red Raiders finished 4-6 (3-6 Big 12) last season and dipped from first to fourth in pass offense (266.7 yards per game) among Big 12 teams, the program’s worst finish since 2012, when it also ranked fourth while still throwing for 345 yards per contest.

To help alleviate those passing game woes, Wells hired TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie in the same role and signed Oregon junior transfer quarterback Tyler Shough.

Alan Bowman’s transfer to Michigan sapped Tech of some quarterback depth, but Shough injected some newfound excitement into a quarterback competition that also includes senior Henry Colombi, who last season made four starts and completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
