Penn State recruiting: 4-star offensive lineman Gunner Givens picks Virginia Tech over Nittany Lions

STATE COLLEGE — Lord Botetourt (Va.) offensive lineman Gunner Givens picked Virginia Tech over a group of schools that included Penn State, he announced in a social media post Friday.

Givens is a four-star recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings, and he checks in as the No. 4 player in Virginia, the No. 4 interior offensive lineman and the No. 131 overall prospect in the Class of 2022.

The Nittany Lions were considered to be a bit of a longshot for Givens, given his proximity to the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va., but Penn State was the only other official visit besides Virginia Tech that Givens took in June.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Givens originally released a list of top schools last November that featured Virginia Tech, Penn State, Clemson, Alabama, North Carolina and Ohio State.

Penn State currently has three offensive linemen committed in their Class of 2022 in IMG Academy (Fla.) four-star Drew Shelton, Lackawanna College three-star JB Nelson and Williston Northampton School (Mass.) three-star Maleek McNeil. On Wednesday, Harvard offensive lineman Spencer Rolland announced he’ll transfer to Penn State after his graduation in May 2022.

The Nittany Lions signed only two offensive lineman in the Class of 2021 in Good Counsel (Md.) four-star Landon Tengwall and Harrisburg three-star Nate Bruce, but Bruce, an interior offensive lineman, is no longer with the team.

Penn State added a stopgap measure in Harvard transfer Eric Wilson, who should compete for a guard spot in his only year with the program, but the Nittany Lions offensive line is a group worth watching moving forward.
